I’m guessing most of these errors are due to being done through an SSH connection. You need to SSH with a system that has this enabled and then connect through ssh with the -X option. I use this to open the file manager on my remote RPi. Best.

these posts show that RPi is totally non-standard and typical of UNIX in general. Most commands are non-intuitive, no wonder I spent forty years as engineer and IT mgr using Windows.
Where did ‘sudo pcmanfm %U’ come from, out of thin air?
Yes, I got pcmanfm to work but what a rats nest. Like many explainations we are given one fact but you don’t explain how to implement it. I got the menu item eventually after much trial and error. At 77 yrs old I may not have enough time to do this again!!

Welcome to Linux! Linux is free….if you don’t value your time :-) In seriousness, yes as you say there are lots of frustrations like this, but that’s the trade off with a software package that is created and evolved by a massive open source community. If its not for you then yep Windows is brilliant in many ways, we use it a lot in place of Linux…but then again it has its own trade offs of course. And bear in mind that without an open source free OS, the RPi would have been unlikely to have taken off as it has. And of course many active and contributing users love Linux because it isn’t controlled by a money focused corp like Microsoft…

Why would it say Root File Manager. It would just be the File Manager but with root privileges.

Ive basically given up on editing locally because file manager doesn’t have access to anything. I use webmin because it works in all the directories.
This is insane we need a file manager that has root access out of the box. This is not a desktop
we need to have access

This command is not designed to be used inside of an ssh shell
It only works if you will plugin keyboard and screen to your server
